Single living
Single living.. well, for some of us, it means tough survival. we must withstand the pressure of expectation, teasing, jests and jibes by most people. Except for the nuns and the priest, people expect singles to be "in search" (?!) for a partner. And the way they express it, you’d want to grab the first unsuspecting stranger in sight for a boyfriend. Well of course, I can play with the teasing, but what about if i dont feel like it? problem with this society is, you just can’t say shut up without offending.
Of course, I am not alone in this situation, in fact even if the NSO has no data for the single population, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out theres an ample pertcentage in the demography who are like me. Nevertheless, it is still regarded as a taboo, a nada, a no no. Am I to blame it on the tv neworks that bombarded the primetime slots with telenovela, enhacing the romanticism of pinoys? or the truly authentic pinoy humor of picking on anybody and happily getting away with it? or is it simply a manuever to evade serious topics concerning the decline of morality, dirty politics, or economic crisis? Whatever, it’s tough to withstand it, and tougher when they want to hear you say something about it. What then could I say? I prefer singlehood? (come on..), havent found mr. right yet? (could be) or Im still learning to be miss right?(sheeeesh) the list could go on and on, but theres just no stopping it eventually brewing a debate which isn’t really my cup of tea.
How infuriating can in it get? well.. its when your totally mad and pissed off that drives them to tease you harder. A mummum reply would basically do the trick, or playing with it just to get by, but it is tempting to cut the perpetrators head off and make a "lengua estofado" of the tongue to silence him till kingdom come. whew…So much for imagination.
I must admit, I am in a way defensive, its basically because the situation calls for it. Things like this fall short of a harrasment to put it bluntly and sometimes an invasion to privacy. It’s sort of a damsel in distress scenario, its just that i don’t wait for a knight in a sexy gorgeous.. whatever to rescue me (no, i am not a feminist). Things like this could easily go out of hand, knowing pinoy they could make a "pulutan" out of you just by doing it. Yah it is sometimes funny, knowing the tribe, but the longer it gets, it has a way of getting at your nerves. That bad. Escape? If your lucky.
Taking a partner would be a refuge, but theres a problem in that area too, there’s a shortage of men, and how much more men who qualify? ( tell me a girl w/o criteria) Of course, theres men who fit to a T, but much of them are taken and for heavens sake I don’t want to linger in that department, and there are those who are not yet taken, free a bird, but well you just cant help wondering if he’s a straight, a bi, a hetero, or a sisterhood member of Rustum Padilla and Maximo Oliveros. I could go on and on and go loca thinking this things over, for really, this issues are serious. and there are those who amorously pursue, you’d think you’l land in the guiness book for the longest hair record, but then you’d think, is this another game? is he man enough, strong enough and mature enough to handle an opinionated feisty spitfire such as mwuahh? or could he also end up with someone I knew who haven’t recovered hehe
So much for single living.
